Inside the Wettest City on Earth: Drew Binsky’s Mind-Blowing Journey to Sohra!
Imagine a place where it rains every single day. That's the reality for the people of Sohra, the wettest city on Earth. YouTuber Drew Binsky takes us inside this incredible and resilient community.
SOHRA, INDIA – What’s it like to live in a place where it rains every single day? That’s the question that YouTuber Drew Binsky set out to answer in his latest travel adventure, a mind-blowing journey to Sohra, the wettest city on the planet. And what he found was a community that is as resilient as it is remarkable.
Sohra, a small town in northeast India, receives more rainfall in one month than London or Seattle gets in an entire year. The constant downpour has shaped every aspect of life in this incredible place, from the way people wash their laundry in waterfalls to the way they wear turtle shell umbrellas to protect themselves from the rain.
“This is the most insane place I’ve ever been to,” Binsky says in his video, as he ducks for cover from the pouring rain. “I can barely see 10 feet in front of me. It’s hard to believe how people live like this.”
But as Binsky soon discovers, the people of Sohra have not just adapted to their wet environment; they have embraced it. They have found a way to live in harmony with the rain, and they have created a unique and vibrant culture that is unlike anything else in the world.
One of the most fascinating aspects of life in Sohra is the whistling village of Kongtong, where everyone is given a name in the tune of a whistle at birth. “That’s how they communicate with each other,” Binsky explains, as he meets a local who demonstrates his own unique whistle. “When they call names, it’s a whistle.”
Binsky also learns about the local matriarchal society, where property is passed down to the youngest daughter. “I like how women are put forward in Meghalaya,” he says, after learning about this unique tradition.
But life in Sohra is not without its challenges. The constant rain can lead to landslides, which can wash away main roads and leave residents stranded for months. And the job opportunities are limited, with many people relying on small shops and local tourism to make a living.
But despite the hardships, the people of Sohra are some of the happiest and most resilient people that Binsky has ever met. “Everybody here is really happy,” he says, as he shares a cup of chai with a local family. “Like, they’re all smiling.”
Drew Binsky’s journey to Sohra is a powerful reminder that happiness is not about what you have; it’s about how you live. It’s a story about the triumph of the human spirit, and it’s a story that will leave you feeling inspired and uplifted.
