Bengaluru Influencer Shahajahan Shareef Arrested After Fake 'Rowdyism' Video Goes Viral
A Bengaluru-based social media influencer has been arrested after her fake video claiming a surge in city violence went viral, causing widespread panic.
In a shocking turn of events that has sent ripples through the Indian social media landscape, Bengaluru-based influencer Shahajahan Shareef has been arrested for allegedly spreading misinformation and causing public panic. The 36-year-old content creator was taken into custody after she posted a video that she claimed showed a surge in "rowdyism" in the tech city. The video, which depicted a group of men driving recklessly and attempting to mow down people, quickly went viral, garnering over 19,000 views and sparking widespread fear among Bengaluru residents.
The Lie That Went Viral
The video, which was posted on Shareef's Facebook page in early September, was accompanied by a caption that read, "rowdy elements were going berserk" in Bengaluru. The inflammatory post was quickly picked up by the Pulikeshinagar police station's cyber team, who launched an investigation into the matter. What they found was shocking: the video was not from Bengaluru at all, but was actually a two-year-old clip from Uttar Pradesh.
"The video was designed to create panic and tarnish the image of our city," a police source reportedly said. "We will not tolerate the spread of misinformation, and we will take strict action against anyone who engages in such activities."
The Long Arm of the Law
Shareef, who is originally from Chikkamagaluru and works for an NGO in Malleswaram, was traced and arrested by the police. She has been charged under Section 353(1)(b) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which deals with statements conducing to public mischief. Her mobile phone and laptop, which were used to upload the video, have been seized by the authorities.
Following her arrest and the subsequent backlash, Shareef posted an apology video in which she admitted her mistake. But for many, the damage has already been done. "This is a classic case of an influencer chasing clout at the expense of the truth," one social media user wrote. "She should be held accountable for her actions."
The Dangers of a Double-Edged Sword
The incident has once again highlighted the dangers of misinformation on social media. In an age where anyone can be a content creator, it's more important than ever to be critical of the information we consume and share. "Social media can be a powerful tool for good," a cybercrime expert said. "But it can also be a double-edged sword. It's up to us to use it responsibly."
The case of Shahajahan Shareef is a cautionary tale for all social media users. It's a reminder that our words and actions have consequences, and that the pursuit of viral fame should never come at the expense of the truth.
